There is need to urgently diversify the country’s economy, in order to elevate the country from its current position as the World’s poorest nation. 
 Niger State Governor, Sani Bello, who disclosed this said agriculture is the future of Nigeria’s economy, urging all the sectors to look inward and identify ways of generating new incomes.

He disclosed his efforts toward repositioning the state since May 29, 2015, when he assumed office. ”It is very clear from the current reality in Nigeria and the dictate of the global economy that the future of Nigeria’s economy does not lie in oil revenue, it lies in agriculture, solid mineral, tourism, sports and other untapped potentials. It is time we look beyond oil. Fortunately, each state has what it takes to create a new economic future.” 
Based on this, many of the locals in the state have keyed into the governor’s advice and have begun to farm for not just their immediate consumption, but also for sale in major markets.

One of the farmers, Mrs. Blessing Samuel said she is looking forward to be a major distributor of farm products like maize, millet, yam, potato, and groundnut.

She said her farm produce could feed quite a number of people in the state and subsequently extend her reach to other parts of the country.

She advised other peasant farmers to take a bold step towards diversifying the sector in the state. “I am a midwife, but I have decided to take up farming so as to help diversify the economy and help elevate it, because we cannot rely on oil alone. I look forward to extending my reach to far ends in Nigeria with not just crop farming, but also animal farming; I urge subsistent farmers in the state and Nigerians at large to take bold steps toward enhancing our economy by going green.”
